1. An overview of DALI

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a two-wire digital lighting control protocol defined by the IEC 62386 series. Since its introduction in the late 1990s, it has become widely used in commercial buildings.

A polarity-independent, two-core bus can connect up to 64 individually addressed control gear devices, with 16 groups and 16 scenes. The original article specifies a data rate of 1200 bps and a maximum cable length of 300 m. Unlike conventional 1–10 V analogue dimming, DALI enables digital communication.

DALI-2, introduced in 2014, extended and standardized system functions. The original article discusses colour-temperature control (DT8), emergency-lighting testing and energy reporting within the wider DALI ecosystem.

2. DALI system architecture

A complete DALI system brings together the following components:

3. DT8: colour temperature and colour control

Part 209 (DT8) supports tunable-white and colour control, including RGB/RGBW. A single DALI address can manage multiple colour channels. The original article illustrates this with a 2700–6500 K tuning range and 0.1–100% dimming; achievable ranges depend on the selected driver and luminaire.

For an office, a programmed sequence might use 5000 K in the morning, 4000 K in the afternoon and 3000 K in the evening, supporting an HCL design strategy.

4. DALI and other lighting protocols

DALI, DMX512, KNX and Zigbee serve different needs. The comparison below retains the indicative figures and wiring descriptions from the original article; actual capacity and topology depend on system configuration.

5. GKC’s DALI project experience

GKC uses DALI-2 in commercial office projects in Changzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai. The original article describes a creative industry campus with a Tridonic DALI-2 gateway system covering 1,200 lighting points across three office buildings.

The system combined daylight-responsive dimming, occupancy switching, scheduled HCL scenes and energy monitoring. The original article reports a 45% reduction in lighting energy use compared with the conventional scheme and improved employee satisfaction.

Early planning is central to successful delivery. Bus topology, addressing schedules and scene definitions should be developed during design. GKC provides DALI design, equipment selection, programming and commissioning services.

Conclusion

DALI offers straightforward wiring, an established equipment ecosystem and mature specifications for both new buildings and renovation projects.

The wider DALI-2 ecosystem supports increasingly capable controls for human-centric lighting, intelligent buildings and energy management. DALI is a strong option to consider when upgrading commercial lighting.
